Management API Access

API keys generated in the TaxCloud web app include Management API access by default — no extra setup is required. Management API endpoints live under https://api.v3.taxcloud.com/mgmt and, with the exception noted below, authenticate with the X-API-KEY header, the same as the Sales Tax API.

Keys created programmatically with the Create an Access Key endpoint reach the Management API through an audiences entry: set audienceName to https://api.v3.taxcloud.com/mgmt and scopes to []. No additional scopes are required.

Creating a key this way requires an authenticated user token, so the call must come from a signed-in user session, not from an API key. A request authenticated with an API key returns 401. To create a key without a user session, generate it in the TaxCloud web app under Developer > API instead.

If an existing key returns an authorization error (401 or 403) on a Management API endpoint, generate a new key under Developer > API in the TaxCloud web app, or contact our support team. This does not apply to the 401 returned when the Create an Access Key endpoint is called with an API key, which comes from the authentication method rather than the key’s access.
